Family, Travel and Life Insurance…how do they all go together?

Raising a Family

What could life insurance have to do with a family vacation? Well, we were off to Paris, just my husband and I….our four kids were staying with his sister for a whole week!! I was so excited. I was going to finally see my Mom’s birthplace. My husband and I had been married for 15 years and never had a vacation without the kids. Now we were going on the trip of a lifetime.

As a busy working Mom, I had started the proverbial planning list to keep things organized and on track. Everything from what we needed to pack, what the kids needed to pack, who was doing what when, the medications, etc. etc….

As I was driving into work one day, I suddenly realized, we didn’t have a will and hadn’t reviewed our life insurance in well over 10 years. What if something happened to us? I said a prayer of thanks for the random thought or I should say, my overworked subconscious and immediately got cracking on a will and review of our current life insurance policies.

We got the will created, established a guardian/power of attorney, increased our existing life insurance coverage and added the 3 kids as beneficiaries. I realized we didn’t have them as beneficiaries on our policies when we secured our first life insurance purchase!!

I was still a wreck about leaving them, but for all the normal maternal reasons, and not because I’d be leaving them in any family or financial lurch in the event something happened to us. It really did give me peace of mind so I could enjoy the trip…. If you don’t have life insurance and have a family, consider getting coverage. Life can be so unpredictable. Being prepared and ready to face those challenges is our only defense. So if you don’t have life insurance and even if you are not planning a trip outside of the country, now is the time to get prepared. Life insurance is an important part of family planning. We’re here for you and we want to help.
