Wellness and Life Insurance - Making the Connection
Having worked in the life insurance field for many years I know what it takes to get carriers best rating class. Did that motivate me to get healthy or to lead a healthier lifestyle? Not always, but when my mom was diagnosed with cancer I promised her before she passed away that I would “get healthy”. I bought the best sneakers, joined a gym, started a weight loss program but didn't do anything with them, until one day something clicked. I can't pinpoint what that something was, but that was 2 years ago. Since then I've lost weight (brought my borderline cholesterol numbers down), am on the “frequent flyer” list at my gym, and try to eat as healthy as possible (still struggle with that part the most).
I was feeling good, but I felt I needed something more, I just wasn't sure what that "more" was until I received a newsletter from my health insurance carrier advertising a yoga class. It sounded like a good idea so I signed up. I knew what yoga was but had never taken a class before so I was a bit intimidated before setting foot in the studio. I was nervous but I showed up with yoga mat in hand and found a spot in the back – I didn’t want to bring attention to myself.
I didn’t know what to expect so when the class began and I really listened to what the instructor was saying, I was surprised at how emotional I got. Those emotions quickly turned to the awareness that I am not flexible at all! The poses were foreign to me but I managed to get through my first class and felt wonderful afterwards, almost at peace.
My first 12 week session is almost over and I've signed up for another session. Not only does yoga challenge you physically (yes, it is hard at times and I've come home exhausted and sore) but it challenges you mentally and spiritually and I love every second of it. My journey is not over, this is a lifestyle change, after all and one that I'll struggle with and one that will change as I change.
My main goal is to live life to the fullest and I'm doing exactly that. Now if I need additional life insurance coverage, I have a better chance of getting a better rate class due to my healthier habits.
