Can You Still Get Life Insurance if You Have Had Cancer?

Life Insurance

Yes, life insurance is still available to you even if you have had cancer in the past. Life insurance carriers will most likely take into consideration the type of cancer you had, what stage, the type of treatment that was given, and how long you have been cancer and treatment free.

Let’s take some time now and go over six of the more common types of cancer diagnosis that I come across when quoting individuals for life insurance:

  1. Basal Cell Carcinoma- This type, generally, has no waiting period.
  2. Breast Cancer- If you have been diagnosed and treated for breast cancer, you can generally be considered for life insurance after 1 year of being cancer and treatment free.
  3. Prostate Cancer- You may be considered for life insurance after being cancer and treatment free for 1 year.
  4. Leukemia- Usually you have to wait 5 years after being deemed cancer free and no longer receiving any type of treatment.
  5. Lung Cancer- If you have Stage 1 lung cancer, you may be considered after 3 years of being cancer free and receiving any type of treatment. If you have Stage 2 lung cancer, you generally have to wait 5 years before consideration.
  6. Colon Cancer- (this one is a bit more complicated)
    1. If you have Stage 1 colon cancer, you may be considered after 1 year of being cancer and treatment free. After 3 years, you may be considered for a standard rate.
    2. If you have Stage 2 colon cancer, you may be considered after 1 year of being cancer and treatment free. After 3 years, you may be qualified for a standard rate.
    3. Stage 3 colon cancer, you could be considered after 2 years of being cancer and treatment free. After 6 years, you can be considered for a standard rate.

Each life insurance carrier varies on how they look at your medical history. But the good news is, if you are a cancer survivor, you do have the opportunity for life insurance
