3 Tips to Get the Best Results from your Life Insurance Blood Test

Life Insurance

Yes, you need have blood drawn to get a life insurance policy. The insurance company is going to use the results to help determine the final rate class and cost of your policy. Here are the top 3 tips for getting the best results from your blood test.

1. Lay off exercise for 24 hours before your exam. Why? Strenuous activity can wreak havoc with your liver function test results. If your results are not normal, the underwriter at the life insurance carrier will be asking for additional information or even medical records to help rule out any serious medical conditions.

2. No alcohol for 24 hours before your exam. Why? Alcohol contains high levels of sugar and calories. This can have a negative impact on your triglyceride numbers, causing the insurance carrier to perhaps question the high alcohol levels appearing in your results. This could result in the underwriter to further review your case to ask for additional information. They could even request that an alcohol use questionnaire be completed or ask for medical records to get a better idea on whether or not an issue is present.

3. Fast for at least 8 hours before your exam. Why? Your blood sugar and cholesterol results could be negatively impacted if you eat prior to your blood being drawn. High blood sugar readings could lead the underwriter at the insurance company to think you may have diabetes or pre-diabetes. We all understand that high cholesterol leads to many other health issues.

It may be best to schedule your insurance exam which does include a blood draw as early in the day as possible. That way you don’t have to worry about fasting too long after you wake up and get ready to start your day.
