Did You Know Weight Loss Can Effect Your Life Insurance?

Wellness

Reached your weight loss goal? Congratulations – you’ve worked hard, are feeling good and look great too! Maybe you’re not quite at your goal yet, but are definitely on your way. Losing weight, getting healthy – impacts many areas in your life, emotionally as well as physically. Now that you are thinking about applying for life insurance, you may want to know about about how your weight loss can effect this process. All insurance companies ask about weight change within the last 12 months - typically the question asks about a 10lb or more weight gain/loss.

The life insurance carrier will ask how you lost the weight. Diet and exercise? Surgery? Illness? Or maybe you don’t know why. You’ve been diet and exercising – or (as some say) changing your lifestyle habits, excellent! Maybe you’ve had surgery to help you lose the weight – band or bariatric. These types of surgeries can affect a rapid weight loss and insurance companies may want to wait (postpone) on approving your application for 3-6 months following surgery. They’ll review your medical records to ensure you didn’t have any complications and are continuing to see improvement in your weight loss, as well as any other medical condition(s) you might have.

Keep in mind that most life insurance companies could add half – yep 50% - of that weight loss back onto your build. The reason for this is because they’re looking for you to maintain that weight loss. So many of us struggle with our weight, that while we may lose that 20+ pounds (or more!), we end up gaining some or most of it back within 6-9 months. Unfortunately, it’s not unusual.

But….if the weight loss was due to an illness or you don’t know why? An unexplained weight loss is a condition carriers look at very carefully, as it can be a sign of an underlying medical condition and especially in seniors, can lead to issues such as frailty, balance/fall issues, or brittle bones.

Again – congratulations on your healthy lifestyle habits!
