New Year’s Resolutions and Life Insurance
As the New Year fast approaches, I’m sure we are all thinking about our resolutions. What goals are on your list? Will you quit smoking, lose weight, start an exercise program, buy life insurance? All of these are great ideas, but before embarking on the road to a new you, make sure have a plan. This is a key part of successfully reaching your goal.
Let’s talk about quitting smoking. This is probably one of the hardest habits to kick, so having a plan will be crucial. According to smokefree.gov, there are several things you can do to help attain your goal such as picking a quit date, letting loved ones know you are quitting, removing reminders of smoking, identifying your reasons for quitting, identifying triggers, developing coping strategies, as well as, having places to turn for immediate help. Finally, set up rewards for milestones – these are so important, as you need to congratulate yourself every step of the way, from the first 24 smoke-free hours to the first year and so on.
Think of how much better you’ll feel when you no longer smoke and how much money you will save. According to lung.org, the average retail price of a pack of cigarettes in the United States is $5.51. Do you smoke one pack per day? That’s $2,011.15 per year! Think of what you could spend that money on, including a life insurance policy. Granted, until you’ve been smoke-free for 12 consecutive months, most insurance companies will charge you smoker rates. However, once you hit month 13, you can request a rating review and the possibility is there that your rate could change to non-smoker rates, resulting in a lower premium payment.
So, as you plan for that New Year’s Resolution, think of a plan that will help you be successful. Changing lifelong habits is not easy, so be patient and take it one minute, one day, one week at a time. Remember that a goal without a plan is just a wish.
