Life Insurance & Porcupines
Shopping for life insurance online is now easier than ever. Nowadays you can research all the available products, which carriers may cover a certain impairment and even run yourself quotes. So why do you still need an agent to help you complete the process? Its all about the ‘unknowns’. Let me share a little story that I think will help.
This past week we had a blizzard in New England that hit the record books – 33.5 inches of snow! That makes things difficult for anything to get around, but in particular it proved to be unmanageable for a porcupine that lives in the woods behind my house. During the height of the storm, he ventured down from the rocky hill for a midnight snack, only to find it impossible to get back up. I found him at first light pacing back and forth behind our house, stuck in the rut he’d been pacing in.
The storm was too bad to call animal control to help so I knew I’d have to help this little guy myself. I proceeded to dig him a path from our backyard to the driveway – let me remind you this was in the middle of a blizzard with 2 feet of snow already on the ground! At the top of our driveway is a rock pile he could hide away in so I led the path right to it. Soon enough he found his way there to hunker down. Good deed done, right?
Well, not quite. Sometime during the next night, he came out of the rock pile to dine again. At this point there was nearly 3 feet of snow on the ground, and pickin’s were slim. Only thing he could find was the brake lines on my wife’s car. Needless to say my wife’s car now has no brakes.
So what does this have to do with buying life insurance? I thought I knew enough about porcupines to handle the situation myself. Had I checked with a trained porcupine expert though, I would have known they have a liking for brake lines, and it would have been best to dig the path somewhere other than the driveway. In the same fashion, you could potentially be making a similar mistake if you rested on your own life insurance research.
