Youth Leadership Month and the Role of Life Insurance

Graduating

February is Youth Leadership Month in the United States and a time to celebrate the leadership role our youths take in their lives. Many young people will soon be graduating from college and will begin a career path they studied for or perhaps a career path they didn’t expect. Many will begin their career with huge debt that covered their college expenses. This is probably the first time they have had to consider life insurance as their parents may have purchased a small life insurance policy for final expenses only.

Children should be encouraged to get life insurance when they graduate from college to develop responsibility. Purchasing life insurance is an excellent part of building a financial portfolio that will shape their future. Parents could assist by introducing them to their financial advisors or insurance advisors to educate the child on the types of life insurance that would be suitable for them.

As a youth, while attending college, I was introduced to my parents’ insurance advisor who showed me various life insurance policies that I was encouraged to purchase by my parents. The insurance agent showed me a whole life insurance proposal, which I purchased and kept for many years. This action created a feeling of responsibility, as I had to pay an annual premium for the life insurance that I knew would benefit me in the future as well as providing a death benefit to my parents to reimburse them for the education they provided me. I was thankful and grateful for their generosity.

Ironically enough, upon graduating from college and unsure of the career path I wanted to follow, I visited an employment agency seeking career opportunities. The employment agency rep asked me if I would be interested in working in working with attorneys, trust officers, accountants and financial advisors in assisting people with their financial plans. I was interested in pursuing the career the person described and it led to my start in the insurance industry working with the company I purchased my first life insurance policy with.
