Term Life Insurance - Important Lessons to Learn When Having a Baby

Having A Baby

Life insurance isn't something to take lightly, but sometimes, we do learn a lot of important information from comical circumstances. Having a baby is, of course, serious business, but there were two specific things I learned the hard way about having a baby... and here I thought I had it all figured out. After all, I had read all the baby books and taken a Lamaze course. Doesn’t that make me an expert?? Apparently not.

For example, I didn’t know you are supposed to wash baby clothes before they wear them the first time… something to do with chemicals in the clothes and a baby’s sensitive skin? I learned this fact quite by accident while having a casual conversation with a co-worker on the day I was actually in labor. I just didn’t know I was in labor, but wait I am getting ahead of myself …Life insurance is one of the biggest things you don't want to learn by accident. In fact, if you wait until you need the benefits of a life insurance policy for your child, you've waited too long.

Life's Pivotal Moments help to dictate our needs for life insurance. And, having a baby is definitely one of Life's Pivotal Moments! Anytime your life changes, your life insurance policy should change too. It is really that simple. But, it is something that must be planned - something that you have to take into consideration before you get into the thick of the situation. Kind of like you shouldn't be washing baby clothes when the baby is actually coming, right?

So, back to the story, I rush home from work, throw the clothes in the washing machine and only then, begin to realize I am having contractions that are coming at regular intervals. So what do I do? I call my mom and she says to me, "I think you are in labor!" Needless to say and heedless of doctor orders, I didn’t go to the hospital until those clothes were washed and ready to go with me…

Now to the knowing you are in labor part of the story. Easy…right? You get contractions and your water breaks….not so fast, back aches can be a sign of labor too, as I learned the hard way….. I woke up that day with the most horrific back ache, the pain was up to my neck. I just assumed it was because of the extra weight and the person I was carrying around. So it was business as usual…buck up and off to work. I had that back ache all day and didn’t get my first contraction until 8 hours later.

But wait, the story gets better…. that day at work , in my blissful ignorance, I agreed to bake a birthday cake for a co-worker and when my husband called me mid-afternoon, I told him I was feeling fine and yes, he should go on that night fishing expedition he just been invited to do. You know where this is going… the cake didn’t get baked, my neighbor ended up taking me to the hospital and my husband made it barely in the nick of time……but the baby had clean clothes!!

Often in life, a little bit of planning goes a long way. Yes, wonderful things happen by accident, but once you become a parent, you begin to realize that planning (and often planning again!) are the best ways to keep everything straight. If your life insurance policy isn't up-to-date, you are missing an important step in the process of having a new baby. Your life is about to change dramatically, and your life insurance policy should change with it! Don't learn about life insurance the hard way!
