How Family History can Impact Your Life Insurance Premium

Life Insurance

Your family’s medical history can have a direct impact on the premium you will pay for your life insurance policy. The areas that the insurance companies usually pay closest attention to are cardiovascular disease and cancer. Please keep in mind that different companies look at each individual and their total history differently, so it’s not one size fits all. However this is something to keep in mind when shopping for the policy and company that will best suit your needs.

Every year when I have my physical with my doctor, we go over my family’s medical history. It is extensive in the cardiovascular arena, but cancer is not as prevalent. My mom passed away from lung cancer, but she was over the age of 60 so that particular history may not impact my life insurance premium rate. I also had a great aunt who was a breast cancer survivor but who passed away from brain cancer. The doctor wasn’t as concerned with the brain cancer, but more so with the breast cancer. Because she was my great aunt on my father’s side, thankfully, the history is too far removed for them to consider me at risk for breast cancer. The insurance company wouldn’t find that particular relationship to be detrimental to my premium rate, either. Had my mom or one of my sisters been diagnosed with or had passed away from breast cancer prior to age 60, that’s when my premium rate could be impacted.

There are many factors that can have an impact on the final premium rate you will pay for your life insurance policy. Navigating these factors on your own can be a daunting task, but the PivotCare Team can help you manage the twists and turns that you will undoubtedly encounter during your shopping experience.
