Should I Apply for Life Insurance While Pregnant?

Having a Baby

Recently, we had a client applying for life insurance who 36 weeks pregnant. She wanted the policy in-force approximately the same time her baby was born, so her new addition would be protected. The client was going through a normal pregnancy with no complications, so it seemed like the perfect time to purchase the policy.

The client had her life insurance exam completed and obtained her exam blood results online. The client’s total cholesterol was 205 and the triglycerides were at 260, which are both high for her age. She showed the results to her doctor and her doctor indicated she never had a cholesterol problem in the past. Her doctor believed the high cholesterol was due to her pregnancy and after a few months, should return to normal.

We knew if we submitted her term life insurance application with her current cholesterol, she would not have been approved at the rate initially quoted. We advised that if she was approved at a higher rate due to the cholesterol, she could pay the higher premium for a year, then reapply for a lower premium at the one-year anniversary of her policy. Of course, this would depend on her current cholesterol results when she reapplied.

She decided to wait a few months and have her cholesterol checked by her own physician to see if it would improve on its own. We explained if she wanted to wait to apply, a new examination with new lab results would be required. The client followed up with her physician after three months and her cholesterol levels had improved to a normal level. A new life insurance examination was requested. Once complete, we submitted her application to the insurance carrier. The client was approved at the original rate we quoted her. By waiting 3 months to submit the application, we essentially saved the new mom a higher premium cost for a year and she was able to secure coverage for her family at a rate she could afford.
