Getting Married? Where’s Your Life Insurance?

Getting Married

Many of us believe that life insurance isn’t necessary as young adults, whether married or single, but is a product needed only for older couples or those already with children. In my opinion, this is huge misconception. Our lives are valuable no matter what situation we are in, and that value needs to be protected monetarily, as best as possible.

One of the first priorities we should have once we get married, or even right before, is to make sure we put life insurance in place for the sake of our new “significant other.” The reason for this is that each of us brings a value to the table when we tie the knot. One may bring earned income, perhaps both might. The other may bring home economic skills and other forms of knowledge that may not be easily replaced if one was to pass away prematurely.

We put life insurance in place because we care about the longevity of the other. We look at our current health and realize that we are not in control of it as much as we would like, and anything can happen. There is no time like the present to get our health “locked in” for insurability before something unexpected could happen and then we are too late to be able to protect our “better half.”

Many couples plan on having children, but when the news comes and we are in a fast-paced situation to get things in place before nine months comes. The stress of that along with the purchasing of life insurance could have been reduced if we simply took the initiative to plan ahead and get life insurance in place before that big news.
