November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month
I was in Florida this weekend to participate in the Lung Force Walk in Fort Lauderdale in memory of my mom and my sister’s mother-in law who both passed away from Lung Cancer. J & J’s Angels was comprised of 18 team members (12 present for the walk), ranging in age from 3 to 51. We are daughters, sons, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law and grandchildren. We never thought that cancer would impact us, but guess what? Cancer doesn’t discriminate and can have an impact on anyone, at any time.
Saturday was a celebration of life and an opportunity to raise awareness for lung cancer and lung disease. According to cancer.org, lung cancer accounts for about 27% of all cancer deaths and is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined! I didn’t know this, did you? That is definitely eye opening information.
Some of the risk factors for lung cancer are smoking, cigar smoking, second-hand smoke, radon, asbestos, air pollution, diesel exhaust and personal or family history of lung cancer. There are things we can do to help lessen the risk, such as stopping smoking or never starting and staying away from secondhand smoke. Other things include a healthy diet, exercise, plenty of rest and limiting stress (easier said than done, I know). But one thing we should all remember is that if you have lungs, you can get lung cancer – no one is immune.
No one was given their expiration date when they were born, so live life to the fullest each day, stop and smell the roses, use the good china, drink that bottle of wine and tell your family and friends how much they mean to you. In the end it’s not going to matter how much money you had or what kind of car you drove, but how you made people feel. My family lost a very special person 3 years ago to a terrible disease but it’s helped all of us to remember what is truly important and reminded us that living a healthy and happy lifestyle can make all the difference in the world.
