Get Fit and Pay Less for Life Insurance

Raising a Family

January is family fit lifestyle month. Are you aware that the healthier you are the less you’ll likely pay for life insurance? Did you know that maintaining a healthy lifestyle can impact the final rate class you receive from your insurance carrier? Information from the Centers for Disease Control indicates that obesity is a growing problem in the United States. Their data states that 35.7% of U.S. adults are obese and approximately 17% of children and adolescents between the ages for 2 and 19 are obese. Some of the related obesity issues are heart disease, stroke and type two diabetes.

Obesity increases our medical costs here in the U.S. These medical costs can be as much as $1,429 higher than people that are a normal weight.

Families are spending a lot more time watching TV and playing video games and not enough time doing indoor and outdoor activities like walking, riding bikes, and working out, to name a few. Now is the time for families to try to become fit by changing some of these habits.

Fitness is something that should go beyond January. It’s like anything else, if you do it long enough it becomes a habit.

Here are some suggestions for a family fit plan:

1. Exercise - for adults and children could be 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week as a good start. As a family you can go for walks together or ride bicycles together. I walk every morning on my Treadclimber for 30 minutes in my home. I started with just the Treadclimber and I’ve since added a 30 minute walk on my lunch hour. We make sure our route includes a hill for a more cardiovascular workout.

2. Eating healthier - this can be done by letting the entire family help in making healthy and nutritious choices at the food market.

3. Track your progress as a family and see the results of your hard work and healthier food choices.

All of these changes can help when applying for life insurance as your lab results could be better due to the exercise and good food choices and by losing weight rates could also be lower. Give it a try!
