Do You Have a Baby on the Way? Protect Them Now with Term Life Insurance

Purchasing life insurance for yourself is probably not the first thing you think about when you have a baby on the way. In fact, it's probably not even in the top ten of your to-do list when you start making preparations. Your focus is on shopping for baby clothes and baby furniture and getting the nursery ready so that when you come home with your new bundle of joy, everything is in place.

As you prepare, make sure you also include their financial protection on your to-do list and that it's in place as well. Even though purchasing life insurance may not seem as exciting during this blissful time, it is even more necessary now that your family is growing. The expenses incurred by your family will undoubtedly increase due to the new addition, but should you pass away, would they have the financial resources to keep up with them? How will they pay their bills, especially if you contributed financially to the household income? Acquiring a term life insurance policy will alleviate this inevitable hardship.

When I talked with my clients, I discovered that many of them didn't have a term life insurance policy. Some had coverage only through their employer but didn't have any idea how much. If this is you, find out how much life insurance you have with your employer so that your family knows what to expect and if it's enough to meet the needs of your family. Also, ask your employer if your policy can go with you should you leave the company.

As you await for your baby's arrival, start thinking about applying for your own term life insurance policy. This will give you peace of mind that your family won't have to rely completely on your employer-provided life insurance. In addition, having your own policy will provide the extra protection your family will need after you're gone and for years to come. I recommend a twenty- or thirty-year term life insurance policy because in that time period, your financial needs will be much different than they are today.
