7 Quotes About Happiness That Will Make You Smile

One of the things I love about happiness, positivity, and motivation, is the amazing collection of people who have dedicated their lives to this type of self-improvement in generations past. They range from United States Presidents, to philosophers, to spiritual figures, and beyond. As we explore the sentiments of these icons, we can read, learn, and absorb their philosophies on life. We can adopt their mindsets and we can grow as they grew. Be as they were. Love as they loved - and most importantly, live as they lived.

Here are seven quotes about happiness taken from the minds of the great which can help guide us in life:

1. Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be. - Abraham Lincoln

Happiness is a choice. It is a conscious state of being that requires gratitude for the past and recognition of the present. More simply put - it requires you to be grateful for what you have. In doing so, you can choose to focus on what you've got, or focus on what you're lacking. This distinction allows you to recognize what you should be happy about, and therefore be happy about it. Happiness is something you choose - not just once, but every day.

2. For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness.  ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

One of my favorite great minds is that of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Among many great quotes is this gem which is so succinctly but profoundly stated. It helps us recognize the value of time as well as positive life lost by focusing on the negative. One minute may not seem like much when thinking about how quickly time passes, but when we understand just how precious it is, every sixty seconds of happiness is one that counts equally.

3. Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions. ― Dalai Lama XIV

Many people see happiness as some sort of conclusion to a set of circumstances. Once they make X amount of dollars, they will be happy. Once they get married, they will be happy. Once they reach the end of the rainbow, they will find the pot of gold and be happy. The truth is that happiness is not a fabricated item sitting on a shelf somewhere waiting for you - it is something you create within, not only from what you say, but from what you do.

4. The best way to cheer yourself is to try to cheer someone else up. ― Mark Twain

By striving to make someone else happy, we very often tap into things that make us happy in order to share them with him or her. In doing so, we heighten our own mood in the process. There is not a set amount of happiness to go around, it can increase exponentially for everyone at once.

5. Whoever is happy will make others happy.  ― Anne Frank

Moods are contagious. You can choose to have your negativity pull down those around you, or have your positivity lift them up. You can either be an anchor, or a helium balloon. Be a universal representation of happiness and see how it impacts those around you!

6. Everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it. ― Andy Rooney

Happiness is not a destination to be reached, it is a constant process of improvement and development which happens over time, as you are along your journey. The key is to enjoy the ride and stop putting happiness off until "someday" comes.

7. Just because you are happy it does not mean that the day is perfect but that you have looked beyond its imperfections.  ― Bob Marley

Happiness is about perspective. We either have the opportunity to focus on the positive or the negative, and those who consistently look at shortcomings or how 'it could have been better,' will always find their days lacking because they never seem to be up to par. Those who accept the good with the bad and are thankful for how things are, however - will always manage to live on the sunny side of the street.

The truth is that we can read, watch, or learn anything about happiness - but we will not actually be happy until we put these things into action and make the decision to allow ourselves to feel the
emotion. Much like learning to swim, reading a book on the topic won't do you any good until you get in the water. You've spent enough time on the sidelines - it's time to jump in head first and create the happiness you deserve!
